Playing it Easy
It's a sunny Sunday morning in Miami Beach and the
entire Kron family is getting ready for their brunch
guests to arrive. Daniel helps daughter Isadora,
4, slice mangos and strawberries. His wife, Geane
Brito, and 2-year-old son, Magnus, set out chalk
on the play table.
As friends arrive, adults gather in the dining area
while children play nearby at a teepee set up in
the living room, nibble on sliced fruit at the child-size
table, and roam outside to paint at the artist's
easels.
For Daniel and Geane, this
easy blending of children and adults isn't just
about entertaining, it's a way of life. "It's important to us to do things
together and to include our children as much as we
can," says Daniel. "That's what our house
and our family is all about. Kids should be able
to enjoy all the rooms of the house, not just have
a playroom, and the rest of the house be off-limits."
They make this theory work
by furnishing the spaces with items - for children
and adults - that are useful, beautiful, and modern. "We're selective about
what we buy," says Geane. "We like simple
furnishings that are safe for the kids, whether that's
an adult's chair or a kid's table. And when it comes
to toys, we love ones that will spark their imagination."
Living in a loft before
they had kids convinced the couple to blend the
openness of loft living with the space and yard
that a home typically provides. "It's
a single-story house and it has an open floor plan
with large sun-filled rooms," says Daniel. "The
kids love playing in the backyard."
The home, built in 1949, was renovated with low-maintenance
family living in mind. Daniel and Geane installed
fiber cement panels to create a durable yet attractive
floor throughout the house. White walls contribute
to the home's spaciousness, while a freshened kitchen
with glass mosaic tile and blue cabinets add color.
Outside, a hedge around the yard provides privacy
and defines a space for children to play freely.
Recently planted palms shade the area, and an enlarged
patio accommodates outdoor dining and kids.
Within this setting, Daniel and Geane have filled
the house with classic modern furniture that mixes
well with an assortment of children's furnishings
and toys. In the living room, for example, three
modern white chairs and a classic coffee table create
a comfortable conversation area next to the canvas
teepee, their complementary colors and simple design
blending easily. Two tables - one sized for adults,
one for kids - function equally well for meals and
playtime. Vintage plastic chairs make cleaning up
easy. The effect is one that encourages hanging out
together as a family, snuggling down into chairs
to read, gathering for family dinners, even riding
bikes across the durable floors.
Finding well-designed furnishings
for youngsters, however, required extensive searching.
Daniel and Geane looked for modern baby products
and eventually found a wide range of goods that
suited their tastes. "We
realized there must be other parents out there just
like us, and that perhaps this was a business opportunity," says
Daniel. "We decided to create a modern design
store for kids." Their shop, Genius Jones, opened
shortly after the birth of their son, Magnus, and
was such a fast success that they've opened a second
location.
Daniel and Geane's shop
embraces the philosophy that they practice so eloquently
at home: fuss-free children's furnishings and toys
that look completely at home in the living room. "We believe in keeping
things simple: If you have surfaces that are safe
for kids to play on and rooms that are easy to clean,
then you don't have to fuss so much," says Daniel. "Our
home is a constantly evolving experiment in modern
living with kids, which for us is a perfect fit."
